MARA CEO: Bitcoin has missed the opportunity to become a means of payment
2026-08-01 20:29:58
According to CoinMeta, MARA CEO Fred Thiel indicates that Bitcoin has missed the opportunity to become a common means of daily payment. He points out that stablecoins are now more suitable for everyday transactions, while Bitcoin's future lies in long-term value storage. Thiel believes that companies that process thousands of transactions per second cannot afford price fluctuations, even minor ones. He mentions that Bitcoin was initially designed as a digital currency, but the market has changed; stablecoins are now more suitable for payments, and Bitcoin has evolved into another type of asset. MARA is still diverting more electrical resources towards artificial intelligence data centers to achieve higher long-term returns. To support this transition, MARA sold about 20,000 Bitcoins over the past year, reducing nearly $1 billion in convertible debt. Nevertheless, the company still holds 36,303 Bitcoins, making it one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders. Although Thiel believes that Bitcoin has lost its competitiveness in the payment sector, he remains confident in its long-term value.
