About ETC
1. What type of cryptocurrency is Ethereum Classic and what is its market position?
Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a Proof-of-Work smart contract platform that emerged from the 2016 hard fork of Ethereum following the DAO hack. It preserves the original Ethereum blockchain ledger and upholds the "code is law" principle. As of early 2026, ETC has a market capitalization exceeding $2.5 billion, ranking around 50th–55th among cryptocurrencies, with a circulating supply approaching its 210 million token cap.

You may not have heard about the collapse of Situational Awareness and former FTX founder Leopold—here are the details from the past few days. A highly promising long-term portfolio was built using 4x leverage. Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness (an AI-focused hedge fund) was not fully acquired by Citadel; instead, in late July 2026, Situational Awareness was severely impacted by a sell-off in AI stocks, forcing it to rapidly deleverage, and Citadel acquired most of its publicly traded shares. Leopold Aschenbrenner (born in Germany, in his twenties) entered Columbia University at age 15, graduating first in his class in 2021. He briefly worked in cryptocurrency philanthropy (including the FTX Future Fund) and was a researcher before leaving OpenAI. In 2024, he published a widely circulated article, "Situational Awareness," illustrating how advanced AI could rapidly reshape society and the economy. Later that year, he founded a eponymous hedge fund with a small seed fund (reportedly initially around $225 million) and a small team. The fund attracted support from numerous prominent Silicon Valley investors, focusing on concentrated investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure and related stocks, frequently employing leverage strategies (reported investments included Broadcom, Intel, CoreWeave, Nebius, SanDisk/Micron-related companies, SK Hynix, etc.), while also making some private investments, such as holding a significant stake in Anthropic. The fund achieved phenomenal performance: a return of approximately 439% in the first half of 2026 alone, with a cumulative return far exceeding this since inception, and peak assets estimated at between $20 billion and $45 billion (with a publicly traded equity portfolio of approximately $16 billion). This made Aschenbrenner a well-known figure on Wall Street and in the artificial intelligence field. In July 2026, AI-related stocks plummeted, causing massive losses (reportedly, the fund lost approximately two-thirds of its value that month). Leveraged positions triggered margin calls and prompted calls from major brokerages, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Bank of America (as well as Citigroup). The company held emergency overnight consultations with investors to discuss raising funds or selling assets. Ultimately, it sold the majority of its publicly traded stock portfolio to Ken Griffin's Citadel, a large multi-strategy firm managing approximately $71 billion in assets, in one of the largest hastily executed block trades on Wall Street; other potential buyers, such as Millennium and Jane Street, also participated, but Citadel prevailed. Citadel acquired the leveraged publicly traded shares. Situational Awareness continues to operate in a smaller form, with remaining assets of approximately $10 billion, including its privately held shares (particularly the multi-billion dollar Anthropic stake, which was not sold in the transaction). Some reports indicate that the price of the sold shares rebounded after the transaction was completed and the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged, highlighting the timing risks of the forced sale. This event has been compared to previous concentrated/leveraged asset divestitures, such as the Archegos case. In short: the company rose rapidly driven by massive investments in artificial intelligence, but was subsequently forced to sell its public portfolio to Citadel when the market reversed. While the company's size decreased, its overall scale shrank significantly, and its business focus shifted more towards the private equity sector. These details are from reports at the time (Financial Times, Reuters, Semafor, etc.) and cite sources familiar with the matter.

The demand for personal and family security is huge and real, and it's already scalable and profitable. One of the largest companies in this space boasts 97.8 million monthly active users, 3 million paying customers, a 17% annualized growth rate in monthly active users, and continued revenue growth. This demonstrates that millions of individuals and families are willing to download, use, and pay for technologies that give them peace of mind regarding their safety and the whereabouts of their loved ones. This is not a speculative niche. It's a proven, multi-billion dollar (and billion-dollar) consumer product category with strong user retention and willingness to pay. This is invaluable validation for any company committed to personal security. This largest company focuses on a clear but relatively limited area: - Its strengths lie in location sharing + location alerts + driving/collision detection + hardware trackers. This creates significant opportunities for genuine innovation. Garly is an AI that learns an individual's daily habits and patterns, then monitors for multiple anomalies (route deviation, prolonged stillness, collisions, missed check-ins, etc.) and alerts trusted contacts without requiring the user to press a button. It approaches the problem domain from a different angle. This is not a trivial feature difference. It targets more complex, higher-risk failure modes that traditional location-sharing and collision detection applications are not optimized for. The presence of an industry leader indicates a market exists and people are willing to pay for it. Its product positioning leaves room for a smarter, more preventative approach—"acting when you can't"—to succeed. Mature market demand coupled with a clear differentiated advantage provides one of the strongest start-up advantages for security technology companies.

Today it appears that the entropy (or lack thereof) in the Cold Card hardware wallet seed generation process has been exploited. In short, insufficient randomness in the seed generation process of the Mk3 version of the Cold Card hardware wallet led to the theft of approximately 594 bitcoins from about 500 addresses within a short period. Coinkite warns that seeds generated on Mk3 firmware versions 4.0.1 to 5.0.3 may be at risk. However, there is evidence that Mk4, Q, and Mk5 may also be affected, although this would require more computational resources. The speculated mechanisms are: 1. For some setups, the entropy generated by the Mk3 seed generation path is not random enough. 2. The generated seed may not be a true 128/256-bit key, but rather comes from a smaller or more structured state space. 3. An attacker could offline copy candidate seeds, deduce standard BIP-32/BIP-44 address paths, and scan the blockchain for funded matches. 4. Once a candidate seed matches a known address, the attacker possesses the corresponding private key and can launder money. At this point, the device's PIN, physical isolation, and secure elements are useless. There's no reason to believe that Ledger, GridPlus, or Trezor devices have similar flaws, but it does highlight a problem: trust is ubiquitous in the cryptocurrency world. We wish everything were trustless, but you must trust that: - Your exchange won't ban your account - Your wallet software won't be malicious - Your hardware wallet firmware won't reveal your private key to the federal government - Your seed was generated from a key with sufficient entropy It seems nothing is absolutely secure. Therefore, for anything that is truly important to you, I recommend using multi-device multi-signature. Generate at least two seeds using at least two different vendors (e.g., GridPlus and Ledger), then configure multi-signature using the wallet corresponding to each seed. Alternatively, write the seed on paper, divide it using the Shamir secret-sharing algorithm, and distribute it by geographic location, family member, etc. Alternatively, you could simply abandon that dream and buy a cryptocurrency ETF instead.

Why is using the "mainstream mining rig shutdown price" to predict BTC bottoms so accurate, based on a review of past bear markets? Electricity costs are a hard cash cost that miners cannot reduce through mere imagination. When the current BTC price falls below the break-even point for mainstream mining rigs, it will inevitably trigger miner capitulation and liquidation, thus forcing out an absolute bottom for the cycle. Looking back at the previous two bear markets: 2018 bottom: $3,122. At that time, the shutdown price of the mainstream Antminer S9 with an electricity cost of $0.05 was concentrated between $3,000 and $3,500. 2022 bottom: $15,476. At that time, the shutdown price of the mainstream mining rigs S19/M30S with an electricity cost of $0.05 was concentrated between $14,000 and $16,000. Based on the current mainstream electricity cost of $0.05/kWh for compliant global mining farms: I. Tiered Shutdown Prices for Mainstream Mining Machines Current mainstream models (S21 / S21 Pro / M60): Shutdown price approximately $45,000 - $55,000. Top-tier water-cooled and flagship models (S21 XP Hyd): Shutdown price approximately $32,000 - $40,000. II. Predicted Bottom Price Range Initial Support Zone: $48,000 - $55,000. If prices fall into this range, mainstream miners (S21, etc.) will face widespread losses, network hashrate growth will stagnate, and highly leveraged mining companies will begin dumping shares to realize profits. This is an area where long-term funds can begin to gradually build up their initial positions. Extreme Liquidation Zone: $38,000 - $45,000 If a black swan event or extreme liquidity crunch occurs, and the price crashes below the main shutdown price, the vast majority of medium-cost mining farms will be completely shut down and liquidated. Historically, this moment of "wiping out" mainstream miners marks the absolute bottom of the cycle. III. Confirmation Signals for Bottom Fishing Don't guess the bottom out of thin air; focus on three on-chain and mining-side indicators: Hash Ribbon forms a death cross followed by a golden cross (indicating miners' capitulation). Mining difficulty experiences two or more consecutive significant negative decreases (each >5%). Miner Reserves drop sharply and then stabilize. As long as these three signals appear successively, and the price falls within the aforementioned shutdown price range, the macro bottom is essentially confirmed.

It seems that the South Korean stock market has stabilized. If the South Korean stock market stabilizes, the hardware sector in the US stock market will probably stabilize as well. This includes a series of stocks that have corrected this time, such as Hynix, Micron, SanDisk, Marvell, Intel, etc. So: 1⃣️I think my trading skills are average, and my bottom-fishing entry points were passable. My personal thought is to hold on, since I've already held on during the worst times, there's no reason to sell just because things seem to be improving. (Micron example, Figure 1) 2⃣️Here's a point worth mentioning: during a violent sell-off, if a complete chart pattern, a key price level, and a surge in sentiment resonate, providing an entry opportunity, then based on the characteristics of hardware stocks during this period, a large margin of error is necessary. Simply put, a stop-loss of less than 10% is essentially giving away free money. The correct approach is to enter in 2-3 batches, giving me about 20% margin of error. If managed well, the average entry price will be at most about 10% higher than the lowest point. 3⃣️Even now, when the market is forming a bottom, significant fluctuations are still unavoidable. As I mentioned before, these stocks have risen so much that they are expected to exhibit these characteristics.

Always lacking storage, with such strong fundamentals and such a low P/E ratio, how did I get trapped? The biggest lesson learned in the market is not knowing how to invest effectively. It took me several years to figure out how to invest effectively; misjudging stocks was the real challenge. I used to think that progress in investing meant learning more methods: technical analysis, market sentiment, financial statements, value investing, momentum, swing trading—I wanted to learn everything. Later, I discovered that the mature path is the opposite: constant elimination. Eliminate those without a margin of safety, those requiring predictions of tomorrow's price, those requiring eight hours of constant monitoring. The fewer methods I used, the clearer I became about what I was doing. It took me a lot of tuition to understand this. In 2022, I was liquidated after going long on a 3x position in cryptocurrency; that was the most emo moment of my life. The lesson is etched in my bones: even if you think something is very cheap, cut your losses when necessary; don't hold onto losing positions. Losing money taught me a lesson. But later I discovered that a more insidious pitfall than leverage was those investments where the direction was correct, but you couldn't hold onto them, or investments you held onto, but the fundamentals and market sentiment had changed. Many people bought Tesla because they saw a long-term story that no one else had: Robotaxi, Optimus, Physical AI. If the story comes true, valuing it within the framework of an automotive company would certainly underestimate it, but the problem is, you don't know how long you'll have to wait. When will Robotaxi achieve large-scale commercialization? When will Optimus be meaningful for EPS? 2027? 2030? We don't know. You might be on the right track, but you can't know how far you are from the answer. I later understood a concept: the shelf life of a narrative. Some assumptions have a time frame—the next quarterly report, product cycle, gross margin—every three months you get new evidence, and even if it drops, you know what you're waiting for. Some assumptions don't have a time frame. Humanoid robots will one day be a huge market—yes, when? We don't know. Every investor has their own real time zone. People talk about long-term investing, but get anxious when stocks don't rise for a year, and start to doubt when they drop 30%. This doesn't mean they lack discipline; it might just mean the real time zone is different from what they think. There's another point many people misunderstand. The market is a ranking game, not just a valuation game. If fundamentals haven't worsened, it doesn't mean the ranking hasn't changed. If A's fundamentals haven't deteriorated at all, but B's expected return suddenly becomes higher, funds have no obligation to return to A. A may not have worsened, and might even be cheaper, but it's no longer number one. The best example is storage. With storage revenue already so large, doubling it again is incredibly difficult. There's a ceiling to how much money can be made in the market, and on the other side, there are undervalued software stocks, etc. So now I often ask myself, starting today, is this the most worthwhile place to put a dollar among all my options? As for why I don't just copy expert strategies, you see experts adding to their positions when the price drops 30%, but you don't see they originally only had a 2% position, no leverage, 30% cash on hand, and had researched the company for ten years. You have a 25% position with leverage, you've been researching for two weeks, and you're adding to your position too. It seems like the same thing on the surface, but it's a completely different trade, especially with the storage sector this time – it's easy to get carried away, and some people have suffered huge losses. Never just copy actions; understand the entire system supporting those actions. This is my biggest takeaway from the past few years: I've started to know which money I shouldn't be making. Some people can do memes, some can hold onto companies with only a ten-year vision for five years, some can make many times their initial investment in options trading every day – that's great, but that might not be my money. When I see opportunities where others make a lot of money, I no longer rush to ask why I didn't. I can calmly know that it's not my game. This is probably the true sign of maturity. Later, when I see a good opportunity, I ask three questions: Why this company? Why now? Why is this money suitable for me to make? The third question has no answer. Even if it increases tenfold, I can accept that it's not my money. The market, having paid this tuition, is probably trying to tell you that you should start to know how to invest effectively.

According to CNBC, U.S. Representative Jodey Arrington's H.R. 9172 bill proposes to extend the "wash sale rule" of traditional financial markets to crypto assets. If an investor sells crypto assets at a loss and then repurchases substantially the same asset within 30 days before or after the sale, the loss will not be immediately deductible from taxes. The IRS currently generally treats crypto assets as property, therefore directly held BTC, ETH, etc., are generally not subject to current wash sale rules. The bill has not yet passed, but eligible USD stablecoins and certain mining and staking assets are proposed to be exempt.
