According to CoinMeta, an encryption ATM ban in Minnesota took effect on August 1, 2026, prohibiting such machines. Prior to this, residents reported losses from related scams amounting to nearly one million US dollars. Governor Tim Walz signed the bill on May 5, which covers machines that convert cash, bank credit, or other virtual currencies into cryptocurrencies. The ban does not prevent Minnesotans from purchasing, selling, or holding digital assets through legitimate online services. Existing machines must cease trading and be removed by December 31. The Minnesota Department of Commerce stated that they are working with licensed currency service companies to ensure compliance. The state recorded 134 complaints of encryption ATM scams between 2023 and 2025, resulting in losses close to one million US dollars.
