According to CoinMeta, a former FBI supervisory agent, Yaroch, was suspected of stealing approximately $1 million in cryptocurrencies and mixing them with personal funds. He consulted ChatGPT about how to use these funds and transfer them to Europe. Federal authorities arrested Yaroch on August 3, accusing him of stealing cryptocurrencies from wallets described as "confrontational cryptocurrency accounts." According to the affidavit, Yaroch discovered the private keys that allowed him access to the digital wallets and used these keys to make multiple transactions to transfer the funds to himself. Yaroch admitted to being frustrated about the inability to stop people associated with "confrontational countries" from using cryptocurrencies, but the prosecution accused him of transferring the assets for personal gain. Yaroch had purchased a flight ticket to Portugal before his arrest, and the affidavit mentioned that ChatGPT advised him to choose Portugal as a destination for the transfer. This case demonstrates how internal theft can bypass security measures.
