According to CoinMeta, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered a suspension of the approval process for new data center projects connected to the state’s power grid, citing concerns that a surge in electricity demand could threaten the reliability of the grid. Currently, opposition to these projects is growing louder. Texas is poised to become one of the largest data center hubs in the world, and industry forecasts suggest that it may surpass Virginia by 2030. However, due to the substantial energy and water consumption of data centers, as well as the pollution generated by the power generation processes required to operate them, local opposition to these facilities is on the rise. Last month, New York State became the first in the United States to suspend the construction of large data centers. In his letter, Abbott instructed that all planned data centers that intend to connect to the grid must undergo an audit before any new projects are allowed to proceed.
