According to CoinMeta, after failing to reach an agreement in acquisition negotiations with AI, a chip startup company named Rain AI, OpenAI acquired the company's patent assets. It is reported that OpenAI purchased some of Rain AI's patents, but did not disclose the transaction price, the number of patents transferred, or the technologies involved. Rain AI almost ceased operations after the acquisition negotiations failed, and most of its employees have left the company. This transaction allows OpenAI to obtain certain intellectual property rights without having to fully own Rain AI. This move may provide OpenAI with access to chip design or related research to support the work of its AI computing infrastructure. Nevertheless, OpenAI has not yet explained how it plans to use these patents. Rain AI was established about eight years ago and focuses on designing dedicated processors for artificial intelligence workloads; its technology is aimed at reducing the energy and computational costs of training and running AI models.
