Coldcard Security Vulnerability Leads to the Loss of 210,000 Bitcoins from an Old Wallet

According to CoinMeta, the impacts of the Coldcard security vulnerability are now becoming apparent on the blockchain. Approximately 210,000 bitcoins (BTC) were transferred out of the wallets of long-term holders (LTH) over the past week, representing the largest decline since December 2024, when bitcoin first approached $100,000 per coin. (Glassnode) defines long-term holders as entities that have held bitcoin for more than 155 days, and currently, there are about 14.7 million such long-term holders (BTC). Before this incident (Coldcard), the supply of long-term holders was close to 15 million, near a historical high. This transfer was not due to profit-taking but rather users re-evaluating their methods of storing bitcoin after the Coldcard incident. (Coldcard) The incident stemmed from insufficient randomness in the affected firmware, allowing attackers to reconstruct users' wallet seeds and steal bitcoins, with an estimated loss of up to $114 million. (Coldcard) Subsequently, it was recommended that affected users generate new wallets and transfer their funds, as simply updating the firmware would not protect the potentially leaked keys. The decrease in the supply of some long-term holders may reflect users transferring their bitcoins to newly generated wallets to enhance security.
