Bitcoin Developer: Concerns about self-storing lead to loss of earnings
2026-08-07 20:50:46
According to CoinMeta, German Bitcoin developer Ren stated on August 6th that due to concerns about self-custody security and key management, he was unable to accumulate more Bitcoin, despite believing in the asset's potential for appreciation. He mentioned, "Security and key management always make me panic," and viewed this as a risk management decision, rather than a criticism of Bitcoin itself. These remarks were made following the Coldcard hardware wallet incident, which sparked scrutiny into the way self-custody tools generate private keys. Security research linked vulnerabilities in the Coldcard firmware to predictable seed generation, and Galaxy Research's analysis estimated that approximately 1,755 BTC were stolen in several waves of attacks. The Coldcard issue relates to the randomness of wallet seed generation, rather than a failure in the Bitcoin protocol. Coinkite acknowledged the firmware problem and released patch software, but warned that installing the new firmware cannot fix seeds created under vulnerable conditions; affected users need to securely generate new seeds and transfer their funds.
