Christopher Smith: Quantum computing or attack on Tether coin-making keys through traceless private key inference
2026-08-10 12:05:20
According to CoinMeta, as reported by Cointelegraph, the founder of Quantus, Christopher Smith, warns that the first sign of quantum computing cracking encryption technology could be untraceable abnormal transfers of wallet assets, where attackers can deduce private keys solely from public keys on the blockchain. Smith believes that coin-making keys are high-value targets, allowing attackers to issue more USDT and then sell them for arbitrage. Blockchain Capital security researcher Sean Cheetham thinks that attackers are more likely to target hot wallets on exchanges first. Smith predicts a 50-50 chance of achieving quantum decryption before 2028, while Cheetham believes it will happen in the early 2030s. Google already advanced the post-quantum migration timeline to 2029 in March of this year.
