According to CoinMeta, OpenAI, the person in charge of ethics, Chlo, who had been with the company for less than a year, resigned in July. The company had not made this announcement publicly before. According to sources cited by The Financial Times, she was the company's only full-time ethicist, and there is currently no successor. OpenAI later confirmed her departure and stated that ethical responsibilities are now shared among multiple model development teams. Bakalar had previously worked at Meta for 6 years and served as the chief ethicist. At OpenAI, she was mainly responsible for the ethics of model development, the interaction between humans and AI, as well as issues related to machine consciousness. Around the same time as her resignation, the head of the security system, Johannes Heidecke, also announced her departure, and the former head of alignment, Joshua Achiam, resigned in July as well.
