According to CoinMeta, Min Gyeong-seok, the head of the Innovation and Growth Office at South Korea's Ministry of Finance, stated on Tuesday that South Korea is expected to allocate 600 billion to 1 trillion Korean won (approximately $707 million) in new funds to a new sovereign wealth fund targeting strategic industries such as AI. The final investment amount may exceed initial expectations, depending on which targets are selected and their funding needs. Min Gyeong-seok mentioned that there are no plans at present to have the fund directly invest in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. In July this year, the South Korean government announced the establishment of a "Strategic Industry Investment Account" under the Korea Investment Corporation (KIC), with an initial fund of at least 20 trillion Korean won (about 94 billion RMB). The investment targets include AI, semiconductors, data centers, and core enterprises in overseas supply chains. The plan is to officially establish and operate a "South Korean version of a sovereign wealth fund" next year. This fund will also focus on robotics, energy, batteries, and infrastructure such as power grids, with nuclear energy, space, and quantum technology also within the scope of consideration.
