According to CoinMeta, and as reported by The Block, the number of new Bitcoin addresses increased from around 260,000 last week to over 330,000 due to wallet migrations caused by a vulnerability identified as Coldcard. Since July 30th, users of Coinkite hardware wallets have lost at least 1,816 BTC coins, amounting to approximately $116 million, in four waves of attacks. This vulnerability stemmed from a firmware defect from 2021; during the generation of mnemonic phrases, a less secure software-based random number generator was used instead of the device's built-in hardware entropy source, allowing attackers to brute-force crack offline-generated wallets. Coinkite has recommended that users who generated their wallets between March 2021 and the release of the security patch migrate to new wallets.
