USENIX Security Meeting: Ethereum and BNB Chain - 65,340 High-Risk Addresses Lost Over $570 Million
2026-08-14 13:11:54
According to CoinMeta, research from the USENIX Security Conference in 2026 found that there were 65,340 high-risk addresses on Ethereum and the BNB smart chain, resulting in losses of 126,982.94 ETH and 17,726.7 BNB, with an estimated value of over 574.8 million US dollars. The study noted that the valuation of the losses was based on the reference prices of ETH and BNB, rather than the price at the time of each transaction. The researchers categorized address abuse into two types: abuse of contract accounts and abuse of externally owned accounts, involving 49,344 and 15,996 instances respectively, with significant loss amounts. The study also discovered a link between malicious contracts and automated wallet mining activities, and recommended strengthening warnings for known exposed keys and improving management of cross-chain contract mismatches.
