Copper trade becomes a real-time indicator of Trump's tariff risks

According to CoinMeta, copper trading is evolving into a real-time indicator of U.S. tariff risks. Copper is regarded as a broader economic barometer and, as a key component of construction, electronics, and transportation, its price has soared over the past year, with futures prices reaching a historic high of nearly $6.90 last week. The price difference between U.S. futures and those on the London Metal Exchange has historically been used by physical traders, banks, hedge funds, producers, and consumers to profit from temporary price disparities and hedge against price risks. As the U.S. Department of Commerce recommends imposing a 15% tariff on refined copper, the current premium for copper has become an indicator of further tariffs. Analysts say that the current premium suggests a 14.6% likelihood of a 15% tariff by January 2027 and a 37% likelihood of a 30% tariff by 2028.
