According to CoinMeta, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated this week that oil exports from the Middle East have returned to 15 million barrels per day, and on Sunday even exceeded the pre-war average of 20 million barrels per day. However, ship tracking services and commodity analysts are puzzled by these figures, believing they do not match their observations of tanker loading and regional traffic. Ship tracking data shows that oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz is at most half of the figures cited by Wright. Various tanker monitoring data indicate a discrepancy of 3 to 5 million barrels in Middle Eastern oil exports, and many ship tracking companies estimate that only about 9 million barrels of oil have left the region through all export channels this month. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) stated this week in its short-term energy outlook that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains “severely restricted” and is expected to continue until August.
