AI Data Company's Valuation Aimed to Reach $20 Billion; NVIDIA Goes from Customer to Potential Shareholder

According to CoinMeta, the valuation of data company Mercor is expected to soar to $20 billion, and NVIDIA is in talks to invest and participate in a financing round based on this valuation. Existing shareholders General Catalyst are also negotiating to lead the investment. NVIDIA is also a major customer of Mercor, having paid tens of millions of dollars last quarter for training data to support the development of models for Nemotron. Mercor primarily recruits programmers, scientists, lawyers, and financial professionals to actually use and evaluate these models, and converts these processes into subsequent training data. Two of NVIDIA's recently launched Nemotron products utilize data from Mercor, and a small number of Mercor employees are now working full-time for NVIDIA. However, NVIDIA does not rely solely on one supplier for its data; it also continues to use data from Turing, Scale, and its own internal teams. Despite using a large amount of synthetic data, NVIDIA is still willing to spend tens of millions of dollars per quarter on real-person expert data, especially as real-person expert data remains a necessary cost in the post-training phase of Nemotron.
