According to CoinMeta, the Crypto Innovation Committee and the Blockchain Association have filed a lawsuit in Sangamon County, Illinois, seeking to prevent the state from implementing the newly enacted digital asset tax. This is another legal challenge launched by the crypto industry against the tax, following one filed by the Digital Chamber of Commerce last month. The plaintiffs argue that the tax violates the U.S. Constitution, the Illinois Constitution, and the Internet Tax Freedom Act. The relevant law will impose a 0.2% tax on the value of digital assets traded, transferred, or stored for Illinois customers by businesses, and applies to companies that operate in the state or have total revenues exceeding $100,000. CCI stated that there is no corresponding tax for traditional assets, and that this measure imposes punitive treatment on digital assets merely due to their different underlying technologies. The tax is expected to generate approximately $60 million for Illinois' finances.
