According to CoinMeta, as reported by Bitcoin.com and News, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stated on August 23 that Congress should prohibit presidents, their spouses, and senior officials from issuing, initiating, or profiting from cryptocurrencies during their tenure, and incorporate this ethical ban into the Digital Assets Market Structure Act. A survey found that 63% of respondents believed that Trump and his family's profit-making activities involving cryptocurrencies were inappropriate. Trump disclosed in his annual tax returns that his cryptocurrency-related income in 2025 exceeded $1.4 billion. The controversy has extended to the Senate Digital Assets Market Clarity Act, which will undergo its first procedural vote in the Senate on September 15. Gillibrand stated that he would not vote in favor of allowing the president to profit from public office with the support of taxpayers.
