According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Treasury Department is considering using its approximately $1 trillion in cash accounts to help fund an expanded bond repurchase program. A report on Monday pushed the yield on 10-year Treasury bonds down by 4 basis points to 4.7%. The yield on 30-year Treasury bonds fell by 4 basis points to 5.23% after reaching a peak since 2007 last week. The Treasury Department's cash accounts are the main operating accounts of the federal government with the Federal Reserve, and the current balance is close to $950 billion, which is significantly higher than the $550 billion to $600 billion level set by the previous administration. Treasury Secretary Scott Branson stated that the market generally expects the repurchases to be financed through new sales of short-term Treasury bonds, but he noted that the cash accounts represent an additional potential source of funds. Officials said they do not believe partial withdrawals from the cash accounts will cause short-term cash management issues, and they expect the next debt ceiling constraint to arise between next winter and spring. The report follows the Treasury Department's announcement last week to raise the maximum amount of bond purchases per operation from $2 billion to at least $4 billion, applicable to the 10 to 20-year and 20 to 30-year segments of the market.
