According to CoinMeta, Crypto Council, for, Innovation and Blockchain Association have filed a lawsuit against Illinois officials against the state's proposed 0.2% cryptocurrency tax set to take effect in January 2027. The two organizations submitted their complaint to the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court of Sangamon County, stating that the tax violates the U.S. Constitution, the Illinois Constitution, federal and state due process laws, as well as the Internet Tax Freedom Act, and causes double taxation. The complaint alleges that the tax regulations are vague, exposing residents and brokers to civil and criminal penalties. Blockchain Association CEO Summer Mersinger stated that Illinois cannot implement a tax system that discriminates against digital businesses and increases uncertainty for consumers and businesses. Digital Chamber had filed a similar lawsuit regarding the same tax in July.
