According to CoinMeta, the U.S. Treasury Department announced the expansion of sanctions against Iran, implementing secondary sanctions in five major areas: digital assets, technology, aviation, gold, and shipping, in order to target Iran's sources of income overseas. The department warned that foreign institutions that continue to do business with Iranian-related entities may face U.S. sanctions. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the new measures will increase the risk of sanctions for related transactions. Previously, the United States had sanctioned Iran's largest cryptocurrency exchange Nobitex, accusing it of engaging in sanctions evasion, terrorist financing, and transactions related to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard. As of May this year, the U.S. has seized nearly $1 billion in cryptocurrency assets related to Iran. This round of sanctions also targets multiple digital asset addresses, including a Bitcoin wallet controlled by Arman Kahzadian as identified by the U.S. Treasury Department.
