Barclays warns that the infrastructure expansion of AI may expose related transactions to political risks

According to CoinMeta, Barclays' strategy team stated that the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure is triggering a backlash among voters from both parties in the United States, which may pose political risks to the currently popular AI transactions. Barclays noted, "Data center construction is turning AI from an abstract technological story into a concrete issue of living costs." Even voters with limited exposure to AI are being affected by higher electricity bills, water resource pressures, and the construction of community industrial facilities. EvercoreISI and BCA Research also warned that the boom in power-consuming data center construction is becoming a sensitive topic during the midterms, with voters growing increasingly dissatisfied with rising electricity costs. Barclays believes that regardless of the outcome of the midterms, AI transactions lack new catalysts for growth and reminds investors not to assume that "rapid AI application growth can coexist with a lenient political environment in the long term." Barclays' AI Data Center Index, which includes over 40 companies such as Supermicro, Arista Networks, and Microsoft, may face policy pressure related to this trend.
