U.S. midterms approach, Wall Street worried about congressional changes and debt ceiling risks

According to CoinMeta, as the 2026 mid-term elections in the United States enter a 10-week countdown, Democrats are leading by about 6 percentage points in the general congressional voting. The market is assessing the impact of their potential regain of congressional control on financial markets. Analyst Ed Mills from Raymond James stated that if U.S. President Donald Trump faces constraints from Congress, the White House might resort to more frequent executive orders to implement tariff measures. The market expects the U.S. government to hit a debt ceiling of approximately $41.1 trillion by the middle of 2027. TD Securities warns that if Democrats control Congress, a deadlock over the debt ceiling could push up U.S. Treasury yields and exacerbate market volatility. Furthermore, if the election results are delayed due to counting or legal litigation, the market may experience electoral chaos.
