Starkware: Bitcoin successfully conducts its first quantum-safe mainnet transaction

According to CoinMeta, as reported by Starkware, researcher Avihu Levy's quantum-safe Bitcoin method was successfully tested in a live transaction on the Bitcoin mainnet on August 26th, proving that it can operate under Bitcoin's existing consensus rules without the need for new opcodes, soft forks, or changes to Bitcoin nodes. This method utilizes hash-based commitments and hash-to-signature challenges, rather than relying on the difficulty of solving elliptic curve discrete logarithms. The implementation cost of this method is estimated to be between $75 and $150, depending on the use of cloud services. While this transaction demonstrates that Bitcoin's consensus rules can accommodate such constructs, it does not indicate that Bitcoin and its ecosystem are inherently resistant to quantum attacks.
