According to CoinMeta, as reported by Semafor, Bernie Moreno, a Republican senator from Ohio, USA, has urged the U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to consider imposing tariffs on South Korea due to its treatment of the American e-commerce company "Coupang" (Coupang). In a letter to Lighthizer, Moreno pointed out that Seoul is currently engaging in open hostile actions against foreign companies, citing burdensome compliance requirements, excessive fines, criminal prosecutions of corporate executives, and biased regulatory enforcement. Moreno requested that Lighthizer initiate an investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. If tariffs are imposed, it would further hinder trade negotiations between the United States and one of its most staunch allies. The South Korean side denies treating Coupang differently from local Korean companies.
