According to CoinMeta, the Solana core client development team anza is removing floating-point operations from the Solana core protocol. The first layer of improvements, simd-0391, has been activated on the mainnet beta at epoch on January 10th, replacing floating-point operations with fixed-point operations in the warm-up and cooling logic of the stake program as well as the verifier clients. A second layer of improvements, simd-0607, has been proposed and is currently under review, with the goal of removing floating-point operations from the runtime inflation rewards and rent calculation processes. anza states that floating-point operations produce different rounding results on various hardware, verifier clients, and compilers, leading to consensus divergence and risks to network activity. These two improvements aim to eliminate such risks by standardizing fixed-point operations.
