According to CoinMeta, the fleet of oil tankers transporting LNG from a Russian Arctic liquefied natural gas (LNG) project that is subject to U.S. sanctions has nearly doubled in size in less than a year. Despite Western restrictions, Russia continues to accelerate its efforts to expand exports of this high-value, low-temperature fuel. Analysis of ship tracking data shows that there are currently at least 20 ships that have served the Arctic LNG2 project and related infrastructure, most of which have opaque ownership structures, characteristic of so-called “shadow fleet” vessels. The latest addition to the fleet is an advanced ice-class LNG carrier manufactured in Russia, which is also the second vessel of its kind designed for year-round navigation through icy waters. This ship docked at the Arctic LNG2 facility over the weekend and loaded with LNG. In contrast, as of the end of December last year, there were only 11 ships serving this project and related facilities.
