Fed's Barr: If inflation does not ease, interest rates should be raised

According to CoinMeta, Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr stated on Tuesday that if inflation does not decline appropriately, central banks should consider raising interest rates. Ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting scheduled for September 16, Barr pointed out that inflation and economic prospects will be at the center of the agenda. He said, "If the data trends give me confidence that inflation will ease towards 2%, then I think we can take a bit more time to assess our policy stance." However, he also warned, "If inflation does not seem to ease sufficiently, then I think we should act decisively to raise interest rates." Barr also mentioned that recent inflation data has been mixed; although the consumer price index reports for June and July were relatively mild, the personal consumption expenditure index reports have been more stubborn. Barr believes that inflation is still too high and pointed to a series of factors, including tariffs, conflicts in the Middle East, and rapidly developing artificial intelligence, "that have taken us off track."
