According to CoinMeta, as reported by CryptoNews, the DEFI sector suffered losses of $1.3 billion in 2026 due to hacker attacks. Attackers exploited stolen keys rather than code vulnerabilities, which led to most of the crypto theft incidents. Both the Hack3d H1 2026 report and the data from Forbes indicate that losses amounted to nearly $1 billion. The attack patterns in 2026 were different from before, with attacks mainly carried out through social engineering, session hijacking, and validator key theft. On April 1st, attackers stole $285 million from a Drift protocol within 128 seconds, while on April 18th, another attack through a LayerZero bridge resulted in losses of $290 million. Neither of these two incidents involved any smart contract logic; attackers carried out their attacks by establishing trust relationships.
