IMF: El Salvador changes its Bitcoin strategy, will no longer use public funds for purchases in the future

According to CoinMeta, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has noted that El Salvador’s Bitcoin holdings continue to rise, but these increases no longer represent new sovereign purchases. Documents provided by IMF show that since June 27, 2025, all accumulated Bitcoins have come from private donations and have not utilized public resources. IMF predicts that there will be no additional accumulation of Bitcoins in the future, which resolves the contradiction between El Salvador’s reported increase in Bitcoin holdings and its restrictions on the exposure of crypto assets by the public sector. El Salvador continues to hold its existing Bitcoin positions, but it will no longer purchase more through government funds to increase that exposure. The agreement IMF limits the increase in Bitcoin exposure by the public sector, and future changes will be easier to interpret.
