According to CoinMeta, Google's project Suncatcher successfully launched a satellite the size of a refrigerator on October 1, 2026, carrying four AI chips into orbit for early testing of a space data center. This satellite was developed in collaboration with Planet Labs and is intended to test the performance of Google's custom TPU chips in space, including their ability to withstand intense vibrations during launch as well as extreme radiation and temperatures in space. Google stated that the satellite will conduct experiments in low Earth orbit for about a year. Despite facing numerous challenges, this launch by Google marks an important advancement in the concept of space data centers.
