The US plans to adjust accounting rules for stablecoins; those that meet the criteria can be classified as cash equivalents

According to CoinMeta, and as reported by Cointelegraph, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) of the United States plans to adjust the accounting rules for stablecoins. Tokens that meet certain criteria can be classified as cash equivalents in a company's balance sheet, thereby reducing the accounting barriers for businesses that use stablecoins. Under current accounting practices, even if stablecoins are fully backed by US dollars, they may not be included in a company's reported cash reserves, which can affect liquidity ratios and loan agreements. The proposed rules allow businesses to use stablecoins for payments and settlements, but require them to have a direct redemption right from the issuer. Purchasing USDC through exchanges may not necessarily meet the criteria for being classified as cash equivalents. In its 2025 annual report, Coinbase classified USDC and other payment-type stablecoins as cash equivalents based on redemption arrangements it had reached with Circle. The public comment period for the proposed rules will last until November 19th, after which the committee will review the feedback and determine the final accounting changes and effective date. At the time of this proposal, the market size of US dollar stablecoins has exceeded $300 billion.
