According to CoinMeta, the Brooklyn district attorney's office announced that it has dismantled the online infrastructure used for cross-border crypto investment scams targeting Russian-speaking users, seizing and disrupting 241 websites and 112 servers. Prosecutor Eric Gonzalez stated that the department specializing in virtual currencies executed search warrants and other law enforcement actions across three time zones last week, in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Scammers relied on infrastructure provided by companies in Eastern Europe and the United States, as well as IP addresses. Victims were lured into investment opportunities through Russian-language Facebook advertisements and subsequently received calls from “investment advisors” who directed them to open accounts on crypto investment websites. With the help of these advisors, victims purchased cryptocurrencies and sent them to addresses associated with the scam platforms. However, when they attempted to withdraw their funds weeks or months later, they found their accounts locked or were informed that additional fees and taxes were required. The prosecution estimates that tens of millions of dollars were stolen in this scam, and so far about 300,000 dollars have been recovered; efforts are ongoing to retrieve more funds.
