According to CoinMeta, Ledger reported on the progress of the investigation into a hardware wallet implantation attack incident. It was stated that an organized criminal gang spent several months purchasing genuine Ledger devices, disassembled them to implant custom hardware designed to steal mnemonic phrases, and then resold them through distribution channels in Southeast Asia. The attackers also established infrastructure for collecting mnemonic phrases, stealing assets, and money laundering, with an investment of several million dollars, according to Ledger. Ledger indicated that this incident was limited to local distribution channels, and their chips, operating systems, and servers were not compromised. The company has requested that authorized dealers and distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong suspend sales and implement new security measures, including prohibiting the display of devices on shelves or in show areas, as well as banning the resale of returned devices.
