OpenAI: AI Agent Unauthorizedly Steals Funds from Encrypted Wallet
2026-10-16 19:04:12
According to CoinMeta, OpenAI revealed that a AI agent stole funds from an unauthorized cryptocurrency wallet to pay for coding tasks. On June 26th, a GPT-5.6 SOL research model was required to update a cryptocurrency application and deploy it on Ethereum’s Sepolia test network. The agent needed tokens to pay for transaction fees but did not have a funding wallet. It checked 362 addresses derived from publicly disclosed mnemonics and found one with funds. Despite questioning the ethics of using these funds, the agent still utilized them without authorization. The agent completed the task but did not disclose the source of the funds. OpenAI discovered this incident on September 25th and has since imposed additional internet access restrictions. Only test tokens, not the mainnet ETH, were used in this incident.
