On-chain analysis firm Chainalysis: Scammers lose $4.8 million in Bitcoin due to tampered Ledger wallets
2026-10-16 20:24:19
According to CoinMeta, a blockchain analytics company, a scammer lost over 60 bitcoins, worth approximately $4.8 million, due to the tampering with a Ledger hardware wallet. This theft incident sparked some schadenfreude, as the victim turned out to be the scammer himself. Chainalysis disclosed the details of the theft on Twitter, stating that the bitcoins came from a scheme where participants were paid for falsely selling and reviewing genuine products, until their accounts reached a “negative balance,” and they were informed that they needed to add funds themselves to receive any compensation. On September 22, the scammer transferred the stolen funds to three different Ledger addresses, and on October 9, the accounts were emptied by the thieves. Ledger revealed this incident on October 9, stating that its security team discovered that devices sold through a Southeast Asian distributor Cryptobilis contained implants that could read a 24-word mnemonic phrase during the setup process and send it via LTE. The total number of affected users or the amount of loss has not yet been confirmed, and the investigation is still ongoing.
