Google's quantum computing errors reduced by 40 times; researchers estimate that 1,200 logical qubits could pose a threat to Bitcoin

CoinMeta data: Google announces that its Willow quantum processor has achieved a 40-fold reduction in quantum computing errors, reaching a logical fidelity of 99.99%. This breakthrough marks an important step towards machines that could potentially threaten Bitcoin’s cryptographic calculations. Although this achievement does not mean that Google is currently capable of cracking Bitcoin’s encryption, it has sparked discussions about the speed at which researchers may overcome the remaining obstacles before quantum technology reaches the point where it can affect widely used public key encryption. Google’s research indicates that breaking 256-bit elliptic curve encryption theoretically may require less than 1200 logical qubits and 90 million Toffoli gates. While these are theoretical resource estimates and not a demonstration of a successful attack on Bitcoin, as these resource estimates decrease, the discussion surrounding the long-term security of Bitcoin becomes increasingly urgent.
