BIS research: Rising deposit rates could curb the growth of stablecoins
2026-10-18 00:00:53
CoinMeta data: According to research by the Bank for International Settlements, banks can reduce the growth rate of stablecoins by 3 percentage points simply by increasing deposit interest rates by 0.01%. For every 1 basis point increase in U.S. deposit interest rates, the market value of stablecoins is expected to decrease by about 3 percentage points within 10 weeks, with an average growth rate of around 15%. This impact is greater on USDC than on USDT, and researchers attribute this to the closer connection between USDC and U.S. savers. Meanwhile, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo still do not pay interest on deposits amounting to 1.6 trillion dollars.
