According to CoinMeta, the South Korean government plans to convene representatives from five major virtual asset exchanges and executives from the Digital Asset Exchange Common Agreement Body ( DAXA ) on October 20th to hold a symposium regarding the virtual asset taxation policy that was originally scheduled to be implemented in January 2027, in order to listen to industry opinions. Under the current plan, South Korea will levy a tax at a rate of 22% on gains from the transfer and lending of virtual assets, after deducting a basic tax exemption amount of 2.5 million Korean won. This taxation policy has been postponed three times since it was first proposed in 2020, but the government is still advancing the preparatory work according to the original schedule. The South Korean National Tax Service expects to issue a related announcement in November. In addition, South Korea's financial regulatory authorities are accelerating the advancement of the government draft for the "Digital Assets Basic Act," with completion and the initiation of related consultation procedures expected by the end of this month.
