OpenAI Fund Leads Investment in Cancer Brain-Computer Interface: Reading Tumor Electrical Signals, Attempting to Suppress Growth with Electrical Stimulation

According to CoinMeta, Coherence Neuro, an American neurotechnology company led by OpenAI Fund, has completed a $45 million Series A financing round. The aim is to directly monitor cancer through brain-computer interfaces and attempt to inhibit tumor growth using electrical stimulation. This technology is based on the principle that brain tumors exchange electrical signals with surrounding neurons. Coherence is developing an implantable device called Soma that can continuously read these signals and use AI to determine tumor changes, thereby adjusting the electrical stimulation regimen. The system includes a coin-sized brain implant, a power supply device behind the ear, and a smartphone APP. The ultimate goal is to enable patients to receive around-the-clock monitoring and personalized treatment at home. The team has already launched human trials at Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia and is conducting record-keeping and stimulation tests on 7 patients. The new financing will support their first long-term human implantation trials and advance preclinical research for other cancers such as pancreatic cancer.
