According to CoinMeta, as reported by Nikkei News, in light of the United States' request for an increase in the defense budget, Japan is considering including more categories of expenditures under the defense spending category starting from the next fiscal year, which includes energy expenses and even some development assistance. The Trump administration is urging U.S. allies to allocate 3.5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) to core defense spending. Japan's defense budget for the 2026 fiscal year accounts for 1.3% of the expected GDP; if related expenditures are added, the total is only 1.5%. Based on data for the 2026 fiscal year, to meet the benchmark set by Trump, an additional expenditure of about 15 trillion yen (approximately 96 billion US dollars) per year would be required.
