Piero Cipollone: Digital euro to be piloted in the second half of 2027 and launched in 2029
2026-10-26 15:26:01
According to CoinMeta, Piero Cipollone, a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (ECB), stated that a 12-month pilot program for the digital euro is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027. If the EU legislative body passes the relevant regulations this year, the digital euro is expected to be launched technically by 2029. The digital euro will have a cap on transaction fees and will support offline payments without internet connectivity, with wallets having a limit on the amount that can be held. The ECB has selected 36 payment service providers to participate in the pilot program, and employees from the ECB and central banks of 19 countries have already completed tests on personal transfers and transactions using the trial version.
