Canadian government releases draft regulations for stablecoins
2026-10-26 15:48:06
According to CoinMeta, on October 24th, the Canadian government published a draft "Stablecoin Regulations" in the "Canadian Official Gazette." The regulations propose that regulated stablecoin issuers allow eligible holders to redeem their tokens at face value, without setting a minimum redemption amount, and they must complete the redemption process within three working days of receiving a request. The redemption fee shall not exceed 1%. In case of insufficient liquidity in the reserve asset market, issuers may limit the daily redemption volume under certain conditions. The draft also requires stablecoin issuers to maintain a minimum ratio of 1:1 between their stablecoins and qualified reserve assets, and prohibits them from providing holders with interest or returns directly or through third parties that are linked to the holding of these tokens. The relevant rules are currently in the public consultation phase and are scheduled to be implemented in the fall of 2027.
