Internet Computer was created by Dominic Williams, founder and chief scientist of the DFINITY Foundation. Williams is an entrepreneur and blockchain theorist who previously built and scaled a multiplayer online game to millions of users. The DFINITY Foundation, established in 2016 and headquartered in Palo Alto, coordinates research labs and engineering teams driving the protocol forward.

The project originated in 2013 when Williams was inspired by Bitcoin. DFINITY Foundation was formally established in 2016. After years of research, the Internet Computer mainnet launched on May 10, 2021, marking the internet becoming a decentralized global computer. All source code was released into the public domain, and the ICP token enabled community governance of the network.

Internet Computer uses a unique canister-based smart contract architecture. Canisters are computational units that combine code and data, capable of serving web pages, running messaging apps, or implementing token exchanges. The protocol employs chain key cryptography and a reverse gas model where developers pay with cycles rather than users. It implements the ICRC-1 token standard and supports ledger canisters for transparent token management.

ICP has a dual supply mechanism: new tokens are minted as staking rewards and node provider incentives, increasing supply; tokens are burned when users convert ICP to cycles for running applications, decreasing supply. The MISSION70 initiative targets a 70% reduction in inflation by 2026 through enhanced cycle burning. The platform introduced a 20% revenue burn from cloud engine operations, gradually reducing inflation and creating deflationary pressure.

The NNS is one of the worlds largest decentralized autonomous organizations, governing the Internet Computer through a 100% on-chain, permissionless system. ICP holders stake tokens in neurons to participate in network governance and vote on proposals. The NNS continuously upgrades the network based on collective voting, ensuring decentralized decision-making without traditional corporate oversight. This democratic structure allows anyone with ICP to influence the networks evolution.

Internet Computer hosts a growing ecosystem including decentralized social platforms like DSCVR, DeFi protocols such as ICPSwap, AI applications powered by Caffeine AI launched in July 2025, and various enterprise Web3 services. The platform enables fully on-chain websites, token exchanges, registries, and marketplaces. Its self-writing internet vision allows developers to create on-chain applications using natural language prompts, significantly lowering the barrier to Web3 development.
