Hedera was co-founded by Dr. Leemon Baird (Chief Scientist and Hashgraph inventor), Mance Harmon (business partner), and Andrew Masanto. Dr. Baird has extensive experience in US Air Force research, academia, and cybersecurity startups, holding multiple patents in machine learning and computer security. Mance Harmon brings business leadership experience to complement Baird's technical expertise.

Hedera reached significant milestones in 2025 including the launch of the Canary HBAR ETF on Nasdaq (third US spot HBAR ETF), Robinhood listing, participation in Australia's Project Acacia wholesale CBDC pilot, and joining the ERC3643 Association for real-world asset tokenization. The network has established partnerships with major enterprises including Google and IBM.

Unlike traditional blockchain, Hedera uses the hashgraph consensus algorithm based on a gossip-about-gossip protocol and virtual voting. This enables transactions to reach finality in just a few seconds, with high throughput and energy efficiency. The hashgraph algorithm is patented and the platform code is open-source under Apache 2.0 license, offering faster and fairer consensus than conventional blockchain systems.

HBAR has a fixed maximum supply of 50 billion tokens, with approximately 43.3 billion currently in circulation. This capped supply eliminates inflation pressures and promotes deterministic transaction fees. The token distribution supports ecosystem growth, network security through proxy staking, and decentralized rewards. The Hedera Council manages treasury allocation transparently.

Hedera employs a unique governance model through a Governing Council of up to 39 major global organizations including Deutsche Telekom, Nomura, DLA Piper, and Swisscom. Currently 13 of 39 seats are filled. Council members serve staggered two-year terms and oversee software changes, bringing stability and decentralization. The model balances enterprise credibility with gradual permissionless transition.

HBAR powers applications across micropayments, decentralized finance (DeFi), supply chain management, identity verification, and tokenization of real-world assets. The Hedera Enterprise Adoption Team (HEAT) actively recruits institutional partners. Notable use cases include CBDC pilots, enterprise blockchain solutions, and smart contract platforms, supported by the HBAR Foundation for ecosystem grants and development.
