U.S. aviation logistics startup Poseidon Aerospace has completed a $60 million Series A financing round, ahead of the maiden pilotless cargo flight of its first unmanned aircraft Egret. The company expects to complete this test by the end of this year.

60 million US dollars are allocated to advance testing.

This round of financing was led by TQ Ventures, with Hanwha Asset Management, G Squared, and JAWS also participating in the investment. Existing shareholders Starship Ventures, Draper Associates, and Drover Ventures continued to follow up with their investments. Poseidon completed a $11 million seed round of financing last year.

The company was co-founded in 2024 by David Zagaynov and Parker Tenney. Prior to this, they worked at Amazon Logistics and Lockheed Martin respectively. The company aims to enter the air freight market, with a focus not on showcasing new technologies, but on reducing transportation costs and improving freight efficiency.

The first model adopts a fixed-wing design.

Poseidon is developing fixed-wing unmanned cargo drones Egret, as well as their watercraft version Heron. Unlike many other aviation startups, Poseidon does not adopt vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) technology, nor does it use hydrogen energy or pure electric power systems; instead, they have chosen traditional fuel engines.

The company believes that this approach is more conducive to rapid operational implementation and can reduce freight costs. According to their vision, automation and remote control can reduce the dependence on pilots and also improve aircraft utilization rates.

Target market focuses on national defense and regional freight transportation.

Poseidon currently focuses its target markets on defense logistics and regional commercial freight. In the defense sector, the company hopes that its aircraft can serve areas with weak infrastructure and insufficient route coverage in order to enhance logistical resilience.

In the commercial aspect, Poseidon does not intend to sell aircraft directly, but plans to operate its own regional air freight business, competing with existing air freight carriers to secure orders from customers such as UPS and FedEx.

The company also believes that drone technology is helpful for adjusting flight route configurations. When demand increases in certain areas, operators are not limited by the locations of pilots and their working hours, providing more flexibility for switching flight routes.

The regulatory environment has become more relaxed.

Poseidon indicates that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States has recently launched a pilot program that is creating a more relaxed environment for testing new types of aircraft. Although this program is mainly aimed at electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, companies say that the change in the overall regulatory atmosphere is also conducive to advancing their testing and commercialization efforts.

In the company's view, the path from testing to commercial operation of unmanned aerial cargo transportation is now clearer than it was five to ten years ago.
