MetaMask announces the launch of a new set of wallet security features, focusing on common issues such as fake addresses in crypto scams, targets of initial transfers, as well as investment and emotional fraud scenarios. These new features have been implemented for transfer notifications on both mobile and desktop platforms. Another feature, named Added Protection, will first be available as a browser extension before being extended to mobile devices.

New tips cover three types of high-risk scenarios

After this update, when users initiate a transfer, if the recipient address is highly similar to a common address, if it is the first time making such a transfer, or if the transaction behavior exhibits characteristics of investment or emotional fraud, the system will issue clearer risk warnings. MetaMask has also synchronously adjusted the transaction display pages on mobile devices and browser extensions to provide users with clearer information before confirmation.

MetaMask The product team stated that in the past, many users would continue to make transfers even after seeing warnings. This indicates that some users had a high level of trust in the recipients, or they were continuously guided to complete the transactions during the scam process. Therefore, this time the platform is no longer relying solely on static pop-ups but has added more specific, contextual interception methods.

Abnormal transactions can be automatically rolled back.

The newly added Added Protection function is mainly used to handle transactions where the preview content does not match the actual execution. According to MetaMask, if the content finally submitted for a transaction differs from what the user saw during preview, the system will automatically cancel that transaction, thereby reducing the risk of losses caused by malicious contracts or disguised transactions.

Currently, this feature is first being launched in the browser extension version, with mobile support to follow later. MetaMask also indicates that during the relevant risk warning process, users will be able to access priority manual support more quickly, rather than just receiving a warning to stop the operation.

AI is used to identify fraudulent patterns.

MetaMask also mentioned that the platform is using AI to identify threats. The reason is that attackers are also leveraging AI to expand the scale of fraud, including generating more targeted scam content and disguising malicious transactions.

According to MetaMask, these identification results will be used for pre-warnings before transfers. Other features that have already been launched or are being developed by the platform include alerts for address poisoning, reminders for first-time transfers, as well as more detailed displays of token and transaction security information.

Law enforcement crackdowns intensify simultaneously

At the time of this update, U.S. law enforcement agencies are continuing to crack down on networks that provide services for investment fraud and emotional fraud.

  • In July, over $25 million in related crypto assets were seized.
  • The US Secret Service freezes approximately $52.8 million in crypto assets
  • The case involves the United States, Canada, and the Telegram market.

For MetaMask, this security feature upgrade also coincides with the eve of Consensys's business restructuring. The company plans to split its business into two segments targeting consumers and institutions by the end of 2026.
