When DoorDash set out to build a drone delivery business, they started with the tricky logistics aspects on the ground before turning their attention to the skies.
According to the company, autonomous drones are the last component to be introduced. DoorDash unveiled this new hexacopter at the annual Dash Forward 2026 event held on Wednesday.
Before developing this aircraft, DoorDash focused first on ground infrastructure, including the loading system, how the restaurant kitchen hands over meals, and the packaging methods.
The research and development team DoorDash Labs responsible for creating the autonomous sidewalk delivery robot Dot, has established a drone delivery service now known as DoorDash Air. This same team has also developed the underlying software Autonomous Delivery Platform ( ADP ), which is used to coordinate delivery tasks carried out by humans, sidewalk delivery robots, and now drones as well.
DoorDash indicates that the ADP software will use intelligent route planning and take into account factors such as weather, flight distance, and ground traffic to narrow down the range of orders that are suitable for air delivery.
The company stated that its “system first, then hardware” strategy for its DoorDash Air business aligns with its own strengths. DoorDash is not a hardware company, but it possesses user data spanning 13 years from both merchants and consumers. (As previously disclosed by DoorDash, there are already over 500,000 restaurants on the platform.)
The company stated that the scale design of the entire DoorDash Air system is based on its historical order data, including order weight and typical delivery distances.
DoorDash announced plans to launch this drone delivery service in July, after which the company had already obtained the Part 135 Air Carrier Certification issued by the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States. This certification allows the company to legally operate commercial drone delivery services in the United States.
The end of the drone's arm is equipped with six low-speed rotating propellers, and it is also fitted with a winch, which can be used for picking up, transporting, and delivering packages.
DoorDash indicates that plans to initiate early pilot deliveries first in Northern California, with partners including Chipotle, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and Momo N Curry.
