MetaOptics Announces Strategic Expansion into Malaysia by Establishing a Wholly-Owned Subsidiary

Singapore, October 2nd / PRNewswire / -- MetaOptics Ltd ( Catalist : 9MT) (" MetaOptics " or "the Company", collectively referred to as "the Group" with its subsidiaries) is a leading semiconductor optics company. Today, it announced the establishment of a wholly-owned subsidiary, MetaOptics Technologies Sdn. This establishment reflects the Group's commitment to advancing next-generation optical technologies and strengthening cross-border cooperation with Malaysian supply chain partners in semiconductor manufacturing, integrated photonics, and nanophotonics. It also marks an important milestone in the company's global strategy, aimed at delivering high-performance metal lens solutions to customers worldwide.

Despite the ongoing macroeconomic challenges, the group continues to see significant opportunities in the field of metal lens applications after continuous communication with customers regarding the design and manufacturing of metal lenses and modules. Traditional lenses have approached their physical limitations. Metal lenses enable further miniaturization and possess higher thermal stability. These key differentiating advantages open up a wide range of application possibilities across various industries. The nanoscale precision of metal lenses can improve the transmission and reception efficiency in co-packaged optics ( CPO ), thereby supporting faster data transmission in data centers.

Establish a metal lens capital equipment platform in Penang, Malaysia to support mass production of metal lenses

The group's expansion in Malaysia is expected to be supported by a first-phase, key capital equipment facility for metal lens manufacturing in Penang. This facility will accommodate three core equipment platforms:

  • a) A set of proprietary, first-to-market fully automated metal lens camera module assembly and testing systems. The component assembly and testing stations are designed to be integrated within the same machine to achieve high throughput and optimal utilization of clean room space. Advanced metal lens optical modules will also be assembled using this machine. This closed-loop approach allows for mass production assembly and design verification to be completed within a single facility, thereby shortening the delivery cycle in the product launch process.
  • b) The next generation of 12-inch direct laser writing ( DLW ) platform under MetaOptics can write hundreds of metal lenses simultaneously with a lens diameter of 0.1 millimeters, which is used for large-scale mass production of optically packaged components. This platform can be easily integrated into standard semiconductor processes, providing a cost-effective mass production solution with low maintenance costs, high normal operating time during production, and convenient conversion.
  • c) Wafer-level automatic metal lens tester: This is an automated optical metrology system that can characterize the performance of metal lenses, including the point spread function, modulation transfer function ( MTF ), light transmittance, and uniformity in the visible light, near-infrared, and short-wave infrared bands. The system can be expanded from a single-piece test bench used for research and development to a full-wafer tester for production quality control.

Mass production, manufacturing, batch assembly, and testing will be closely arranged side by side. This will help to shorten the development cycle, improve production yield, and accelerate the path from prototype to commercial mass production.

Strategic entry into Malaysia

Malaysia boasts a rich reserve of engineering and semiconductor talents, and its proximity to Singapore facilitates faster operational execution, especially in areas such as supply chain management and delivery. The group looks forward to closely collaborating with Malaysian investors and government agencies to develop the metal lens industry in Malaysia.

MetaOptics Executive Chairman Thng Chong Kim stated: "Malaysia has a mature semiconductor foundation, a deep reserve of process engineering talents, and is close to customers and suppliers. MetaOptics Technologies Sdn. The establishment of Bhd will enable us to build manufacturing, assembly, and testing capabilities in Malaysia. This will serve the growing metal lens industry in that region."

Singapore will still be the headquarters of the group.

The group continues to advance its diversified growth strategy, covering four core business segments:

  • (i) Metal lens capital equipment
  • ( ii ) Metal lens design and manufacturing
  • ( iii ) Metal lens IoT products and smart devices
  • ( iv ) AI Algorithm

With the group's continued internationalization, Singapore will still remain the headquarters and core R&D base of the group, and will continue to serve as an outstanding center for the group's technology, metal lens design, product development, strategic planning, and coordination of the four main business departments.
