SecondSight indicates that as insurance companies shift from general artificial intelligence to systems built on their own data, the company has completed its Series A financing and appointed former Ryan Financial Lines and Celerity Risk's CEO, Jamie Bouloux, as president.

According to SecondSight, with the support of investors with extensive experience in the insurance market, this financing will accelerate organizational growth and product development, and enable the company to expand into more types of insurance beyond its initial online insurance business.

The operating system SHAPE of SecondSight will continuously learn from the insurance company's own data and real-time external signals, revealing how risks are interconnected and evolve at the speed of the market. The company states that this system, based on traceable evidence, helps brokers, underwriters, and executives anticipate risk exposures and seize growth opportunities.

According to SecondSight, the company is collaborating with some of the largest insurance companies around the world to reinvent the insurance lifecycle driven by AI. Its operating system is not just an automated tool; it also provides decision support for distribution, underwriting, and reinsurance processes, helping teams to grow premiums more efficiently, improve claim settlement rates, and allocate capital more strategically.

Bouloux possesses nearly 20 years of experience in insurance and technology, with deep expertise in online insurance, underwriting, and specialized insurance. Upon taking on the role of president, he will lead the business strategy and customer relations of SecondSight, as well as be responsible for the company's growing leadership team in the insurance industry.

SecondSight CEO Reuben Vandeventer stated: " Jamie has established and operated the businesses that we serve. He understands how decisions made at the underwriting stage are translated into portfolio performance, and he also knows where technology needs to create value. Together with those who understand these markets, he will lead us to expand into more types of insurance."

Bouloux Appointed as President

Bouloux has recently served as the CEO of Ryan Financial Lines and Celerity Risk, overseeing businesses that cover both internet and financial insurance categories. Prior to this, he founded and served as the CEO of EmergIn Risk for 8 years; this is an internet insurance company based in London and the United States. Even earlier in his career, he led the large-scale enterprise internet insurance business at CFC Underwriting and held several leadership positions at AIG, including being responsible for internet, technology, media, and telecommunications liability insurance in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. During that time, he helped to develop the company's international internet insurance products and strategies.

Bouloux represents: "My career has always been about underwriting risks and building insurance businesses, often making decisions while the books are still changing. What attracted me to join SecondSight is the visibility that is not available elsewhere. My focus is to help the insurance team see and understand the information conveyed by their own data, and to take action with greater precision."

Visibility Gap

Essentially, the insurance industry is a science about seeing the future. Each insurance policy represents a commitment made after pricing the potential events that may occur in the future. The professionals who price these commitments are among the most sophisticated minds in the financial field, yet the tools they use were designed for a world that moves at a slower pace. The information necessary to understand risks is still scattered across different systems, teams, and stages of the insurance lifecycle.

The pressure to address this gap is increasing. Research by KPMG finds that 77% of insurance industry leaders surveyed stated that if the corporate architecture cannot be redesigned for AI, competitiveness will be compromised within five years.

General artificial intelligence alone cannot fill this gap. Large language models ( LLM ) can interpret documents and speed up daily work, but insurance decisions require quantitative analysis of the insurance company's own premiums, claims, and risk exposures, supported by traceable evidence.

Quantitative AI tailored for insurance

The technical approach of SecondSight starts by examining relationships that are often obscured by conventional averaging methods and traditional clustering techniques. SHAPE combines algebraic geometry and topological methods—mathematical techniques that can reveal the underlying “shape” of complex data—with specially designed deep learning algorithms. Its large-scale quantitative models ( LQM ) learn from the numerical and structural relationships within policies, premiums, claims, and risk exposures.

The system organizes these records into a interconnected map of risk groups and tracks their changes. A built-in model factory uses this map to train specialized models for specific types of risks, niche markets, and decision-making purposes, and also simulates how investment portfolios may evolve. Language models assist users in formulating questions, but risk analysis is based on quantitative models trained using the client's own data.

Underwriters and portfolio managers can investigate concentration levels, trace findings back to the underlying policies, and test changes in pricing, underwriting preferences, or risk exposure limits. Portfolio structures can be reproduced with the same inputs and settings; predictions convey uncertainties, and model updates must be verified and manually approved before being put into production.

SHAPE can work in conjunction with existing core infrastructure and adapt to the products, workflows, and underwriting strategies of various organizations. Customers possess models trained based on their data, including model weights and audit trails, which are stored in isolated customer environments.

SecondSight refers to this outcome as "insurance alpha": the ability to understand risks more accurately, to perceive them earlier, and to translate this awareness into action.

Created by insurance industry insiders

SecondSight brings together senior insurance operations professionals – including those in underwriting, brokerage, and portfolio management – with doctoral researchers in mathematics and data science. Its approach is based on research co-published with Indiana University.

Bouloux is the first of several senior insurance industry leaders that SecondSight will introduce over the coming weeks.
